Types of Pump Seals

Mechanical seals are some of the most-commonly utilized pump seals used for compressors and industrial pumps. The most prominent element of a mechanical seal is that it’s designed to seal faces that can gradually wear down, resulting in a longer service life for your pump. Common types of mechanical seals include:

  • Pusher and Non-Pusher
  • Balanced and Unbalanced
  • Conventional
  • Cartridge Type

In addition, the following components are also characterized as mechanical pump seals:

  • Gaskets
  • O-rings
  • Bellow seals
  • Cartridge seals
  • Labyrinth seals
  • Radial Shaft seals
  • Axial Shaft seals

Mechanical seals for compression packing offer advantages that include sustaining highly corrosive fluids and high pressure, as well as friction between moving parts. Mechanical seals typically ensure very little or no leakage of fluid from pump casings. These strong mechanical seals require minimal maintenance and are available in a variety of designs for multiple applications.

It’s All About the Design

The design of a basic mechanical pump seal is extremely important. In most cases, a mechanical seal features three sealing points that include two simple static seals and one primary seal which is essential for maximum efficiency. In most designs, the primary seal can be defined as a spring-loaded vertical bearing and includes one fixed, one rotating and two flat faces. The design allows for the seal faces to be pushed together using spring force and hydraulic force from the sealed fluid. The result is that the mechanical pump seal forms in order to prevent leaking between stationary areas of the pump and the rotating shaft.
